What an AI agent actually does

18 Sep 2026

A hand checking off the next step on a list

An agent is not a chatbot with a new name. It is a loop that can look something up, choose a next step, and stop.

A chatbot answers. An agent acts.

A chatbot takes a message and returns a message. That is a single turn. An agent is built for a task that may take several turns: read the request, decide what is missing, use a tool, look at the result, and either finish or try again.

The word “agent” got popular because the loop is useful. It is also easy to oversell. If the software cannot call a tool or stop on its own, it is still a chatbot, whatever the label says.

The loop is small

Most agents repeat four moves. Understand the goal. Pick a tool, such as search, a database, or a calendar. Read what came back. Decide whether the goal is met. Then they either reply or take another step.

The hard part is the decision to stop. A loop that never stops burns time and money. A loop that stops too early hands back a guess. Good agents have a budget: a maximum number of steps, and a rule for when the answer is good enough.

Tools matter more than the model name

The model is the part that writes and chooses. The tools are the part that touches the real world: files, inboxes, records, browsers. An agent with no tools can only talk about the task. An agent with the wrong tools can change the wrong record.

If you are evaluating one, ask which tools it can call, what it is allowed to change, and how a person reviews the step that matters. Those three answers tell you more than a demo transcript.
