What local first means for an app
28 Aug 2026

Local first means the phone keeps the record, and the server catches up. It is a data choice, not a slogan about working offline.
The server is not the only copy
Most apps treat the server as the real database and the phone as a window. If the window cannot reach the server, the app stops. Local first flips that. The copy on the device is a real copy. The server is where copies meet.
This is an old idea in research on collaboration software. It came back because phones lose signal in ordinary places, and because people expect an app to open even when the network is rude.
Sync is the hard part
Saving locally is easy. Merging two edits is not. If two people change the same note before either device reconnects, the app needs a rule: last write wins, or the edits combine, or a person chooses.
There is no universal rule. A shopping cart can often take the latest quantity. A signed form usually cannot. The data model has to say which fields may merge and which must not.
Offline is the test, not the feature list
Turn the radio off and use the main path. Can you open the record, change it, and see that the change is waiting to send? If the app only shows a spinner, it is online only with a nicer error.
Local first also means the device holds data you must protect. Encryption and a clear logout matter more when the database is in someone’s pocket.
